Hello everyone, how are you doing today?

Using a CPAP machine to manage sleep apnea can be challenging, but a recent study shows the power of peer support in making it easier. The research found that patients with obstructive sleep apnea who received peer mentoring used their CPAP devices more consistently (for an average of 4.5 hours per night, compared to 3.7 hours for those without support) and reported higher satisfaction with their care compared to those who only received educational materials. This approach not only reduces the burden on healthcare providers but also adds a personal touch to care.

Would having someone guide you through the process make you more likely to stick with CPAP therapy?

Thank you again Somya for including me in the discussion.

It appears that I will be the first to comment on this subject. I have been on Sleep Apnea Therapy with the Bi-PAP machine for about 5 years now with no outside Peer Support, other than Facebook Groups to discuss the treatment and varying options in machines and accessories. My former Pulmonologist ordered the sleep study and then the equipment. Nothing after that from him nor the DME, other than the monthly or quarterly supplies received and any co-payment bills. Not even a discussion on the sleep reports that the machine tracks and submits back to the DME.

With my numerous health issues I did my own research on the subject as I do on all things medically related affecting me. For me personally, I cannot sleep nor even take an afternoon nap without my Bi-PAP. These (Facebook) group comments and discussions have helped me tremendously, as has doing my own research on the equipment and options. I also chime in on responses where I think I have value to add to discussions.

Would be interesting to see and hear what others have to say and what sort of peer mentoring is available to them.

@Gordon, I find your comments helpful. While I am not on bi-pap, CPAP is still a taxing process to use every night. Most pulmonologists would do well to implement a peer-to-peer support program or provide more assistance to their patients using CPAP.

I have 100% compliance using my ASV machine because I cannot sleep/nap without it now IMO it is a little bit of a hassle… but when I first got diagnosed and sent home with a cpap machine I think I adjusted quickly in part from using scba during hazmat but I liked how much better I felt in the mornings I wanted to wear it..

Hi. CPAP therapy. Well, I used to use 1, but hated it! Now have had an oral appliance made. Easier for me, but still SO exhausted daily. Don't believe there's any quick fix for sleep apnea. Mainly disliked wearing a mask that made me feel like Darth Vader. My Dad was prescribed CPAP, & he disliked it, too. He has passed away, but gave it the ole college try. And so have I. Tried wayy too many masks, face, nasal pillows, none felt right. Plus meds I take at night, many have antihistamine properties. That puts many ppl to sleep. Yet, when went for allergy testing, not supposed to have used antihistamines for 5 days before. Didn't know, meds had it in. Tests were inconclusive, as I didn't react to Any. Bummer. So, took blood to see if I am allergic to anything else. That brings me to my almost nonexistent veins. Very hard stick!! But it was finally gotten. On my hand. Arm veins roll & collapse. Awaiting results. CPAP, not my friend. Mouth appliance, not lots better, yet preferred to alternative. Keep well
