Hi everyone, I haven't been on in a bit, but I'm curious about diet. I get like no information from my doctor or specialists (which is another annoying story), so I was wondering if you all have any information about diets for NASH? Is there anything I should be avoiding or any foods that help it? I'd appreciate any advice or tips!

Thanks!

@livinginSEA Hello living in SEA, thank you for starting this discussion. I'm sorry you don't feel properly supported by your doctor. Let me tag some members who may be able to share their advice or experience with you.

Hello everyone, how are you doing? Do you follow a certain diet for NASH? Did your doctor give you any particular advice? Are there any foods that NASH patients should be avoiding or enjoying in particular? Are there any foods that you miss? Feel free to share below!

@livinginSEA I know what you mean, I was  also kind of left in the dark on this. After I was diagnosed I made an appointment with an amazing nutritionist who took the time to look into NASH and help me with it. She recommended that I avoid high-glycemic foods like starches, breads and things and focus on low glycemic foods like vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. She also told me to stop drinking alcohol (which was hard for me), and to stop the sugary drinks. It's kind of your "common sense" diet I guess, or what people usually say to do when you need to lose weight. Maybe others on here know of other more "interesting" diets.

There is a great NAFLD fatty liver nutrition group on Facebook. They offer avoid and amazing lists. They are very strict about you reading the material before asking questions but it’s helped me lose 30 lbs. Once I cheated though, I haven’t been able to get back on it.

it’s really about avoiding foods that harm the liver more than losing weight although you will naturally lose weight. You will need to read labels really carefully. Low fat and sugar free is really bad for the liver. There’s so much we can have though. Heavy cream for coffee, hard cheese, and more. It’s very helpful to me. I hope it’s ok to leave that link here. We have people in the group from all over the world. Hope to see you there.

@livinginSEA I started just trying to eat a more balanced diet, so I cut down on the starches and focus on lean meats and fruits and vegetables. I don't know if it's right, but it's helped me lose some weight. I wanted to go vegetarian at least, but I've taken up cycling and I just wasn't getting enough energy without meat. I've heard that the Mediterranean diet is supposed to be good for fatty liver, but I haven't really looked into it. Has anyone else tried it?
