Hi everyone, it's been a while since I've been on. But I'm going through chemo again and my hair has started falling out. I'm trying to process the whole thing again mentally, since hair is so important to our female identity, but that's another conversation.

I guess I wanted to ask, what do you all do to cover it? Do you cover it at all? I'm thinking that now summer is coming I should probably wear hats or something to protect from the sun. But I thought maybe it could be fun to accessorize? What do you all prefer? Hats? Wigs? Scarves? Turbans? Nothing?

I'm open to any and all suggestions!

@missshe Hello missshe, welcome back and thank you for starting this discussion! This is a great topic, let me tag some other members so they can share their experiences!

Hello ladies, I hope you're doing well! Did you experience or are you experiencing hair loss during your breast cancer treatment? If so, did you choose to wear a head covering like a wig, scarf, or hat? Which did you prefer and why? Do you have any "styling" tips for missshe?

@missshe I went through the same thing with chemo. I didn't go with a wig because I couldn't find any I liked or that looked natural enough for me. And also everyone I knew or cared about knew what I was going through so it felt silly to me to pretend with a wig. But I think wigs are great, especially now a days they're really nice quality and you can get really real looking ones with all the big celebrities wearing them these days. Personally I went bareheaded a lot of the time and then would put on hats if I was in the sun or if I just felt like it. I see people do amazing things with wraps! You can so all sorts of fun things with fabrics and then with pins and stuff like that!

I was diagnosed with breast cancer March 13,2020. My first treatment was that same day. Right afterwards I went home and noticed alot of my hair was coming out. The doctor said I was at the highest chemo treatment given to patients. The next treatment was draining me,when I got home later I noticed more and my head was really hurting with I touched it. I was told it would be better if I shave it off so my head would not be so sore from chemo. I did and it worked great! Now I wear scarfs and hats to cover, but when I am home I just go all natural! I thought about a wig and still am. I still do not know if I want one yet. I know some people that wear wigs everyday and they say it helps them cope with the hair loss, and their situation.

@yankeerose @sara_at32 Thank you both for your replies! I'm considering a wig too but like you both I'm hesitant. I know they can really be helpful to cope. If you find good ones let me know! I'm definitely interested in scarves and wraps, I was looking at some on Etsy and there are some fun patterns! All the best for your treatments!

I hope this finds you stand strong I to have the battle of physical appearance and emotional distress over losing my hair with chemo my aggressive chemo program cause my hair to completely fall out after my 1st dose I had no knowledge of hat scarves turbans or wigs since I was blessed with abundant head of hair as devastating as that is I was advised to contact American Cancer Society their organization was absolutely helpful they have a program where they will teach you how to pick a wig hat or scarf used them in style I'm and the actually gifted me with them it was very enlightening very helpful and I found out a lot of information one of the most important things was they mentioned in our type of chemo , At aggressive program like Yankee rose keeping the scalp moist but not to the point of being a problem they recommended using coconut oil and not the kind you cook or eat that actually design for the hair and the scalp condition in it and keeping it soft and moist because chemo will dry it out my biggest problem was constantly cold I'd never been without here so my head was always called the coconut oil worked when I wore turbans but I found wigs to be the most rewarding for me made me feel more like me I didn't have a opportunity to stay home I had to work through the chemo I found that keeping busy work for me you're just as beautiful inside as you are outside so try all 3 you'll find it to be a surprising result each day  Provides an opportunity to try a new look.

There are non-profit institutions like Cancer Carepoint in San Jose, CA that offer wigs for free.

I've got a great one ash blond I use for work (I teach online) and a blond halo to wear with a hat (in my case I wear it with a baseball cap when I hike or the helmet when I bike.  A friend gave me a red wig I use to teach Yoga classes online. I also bought a cheap blond one that I cannot wear anymore because my hair start showing up a bit and is ash blond.  Anyway I love them all and everybody knows what I went through so all together started naming the different persons I am: Silvia the red head, Genevieve the ash blond girl, Barb the sport girl... It's really fun and makes me feel great.

I finished my chemo on March 6 and my hair is growing sloooowly, but it's ok because online I look even better ;)

Here to help whoever needs my help.
