Hello everyone, I've rediscovered Carenity since I've had more "free time" or "thinking time" lately. I've been in remission for almost 4 years now, but I feel like I will carry the stress of cancer with the for the rest of my life.

I never got tested for the BRCA gene and I was wondering if anyone knows how to go about it? Is this something I need to talk to my oncologist about or a GP? I'd really love to be tested myself and hopefully have my daughter tested too if she's up for it. If i can prevent her from having to go through this one day, I'll do anything to make that happen.

@larab5 Hello larab5, thank you for starting this discussion, I think other members may be interested in this too.

For those who may not know, the BRCA gene test is a blood test that uses DNA analysis to identify mutations (harmful changes) in either one of the two breast cancer susceptibility genes (BRCA1 and BRCA2). People who inherit mutations in these genes are at an increased risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer compared to the general population.

Have any of you had a BRCA gene test done? Is this something you would be interested in for yourself or for your children? Feel free to share your experiences or opinions on this below!

@larab5 @Courtney_J  My sister had this done after I was diagnosed. I'll have to ask her where she did it. Does anyone else know?

@Mrsrick1013 Thanks for commenting. Where did you have it done? Did you go through your doctor? I'm not sure where to start with this.

@larab5 I think those DNA/ancestry sites do it, but I'm not sure how accurate it is. I think 23andMe does one. Has anyone tested positive for it?

I did go through my doctor.  Eveyrthing was done in an office connected to my oncologists office.  You should ask your oncologist.  My surgeon is the one who suggested I get the test  due to the risk factors.  My insurance covered it 100%.
