I am 74 yrs old. I was diagnosed with MS 6 yrs. ago.  The way it came on was quick, I became paralyzed from the neck down in about 30 min.  I was told in the hospital after tests that I had MS.  I have never heard of anyone instantly coming down with MS.  My family Dr, thought it was odd. When I was in rehab one of the nurses said that I was diagnosed with MS but had symptoms of something else.  She looked up my symptoms and found GBS. She had never heard of it before and did not even know how to pronounce it.  We went over all my symptoms again and they all pointed to GBS.  I asked my Neurologist if I could have both and he said it was highly unlikely.( The nurse was doing this on her own time and said she could get trouble discussing this with me but she was just curious as it seemed that there was something else wrong with me.)

What do you think???

@BWroke Hello BWroke, thank you for opening this discussion and sharing what you've been through! MS and Guillain-Barré syndrome are both autoimmune diseases that attack the nervous system, so they have a few similarities!

Hi everyone, have you heard of Guillain-Barré syndrome? Have any of you heard of it being diagnosed in addition to MS? What do you think?

@Courtney_J   I realize that MS and GBS are similar in ways.  That was my point. I became paralyzed from the neck down in 30min . I was shut down inside too. I was breathing very shallow and had no control of my organs and after testing was found to have MS.  I was trying to see if anyone else out there was ever struck down like that and then diagnosed with MS.  All these symptoms seem to be more related to GBS.

                                                      Thanks, BWroke

I've heard of  Guillain-Barré syndrome but have never looked into this disease. As another autoimmune disorder, it would be interesting to learn more.

@Fufu08 Look up GBS it's interesting.  They thought at the time pres. FDR had polio but know they think it was GBS. I had never heard of it until the nurse in my rehab brought it up to me because of the symptoms I should. She thought it looked more like I had GBS.  GBS you can get better or completely come back to normal.  Or it can kill you.

At my first exacerbation (Nearly 50 years ago now), before I was diagnosed with MS, the neurologist considered GBS, or, as he called it, "French polio."This was at the height of the swine flu epidemic, and some of those cases turned into GBS. The big difference is that the exacerbation goes away in a matter of weeks, leaving no aftereffects, and another relapse may not happen for years. (Gee, sounds like MS, don't it?) But there are tests for MS, such as an MRI of the brain.

By the way, MS exacerbations do come on very quickly. I woke up one time with total numbness in my hand. Your instance might seem extreme, but similar cases have happened.

Have you checked with your neurologist? That nurse may have meant well, but you need to check with him/her if only for your peace of mind

I did check with the neurologist that diagnosed me with MS.  He said the tests showed MS. The other docs I have been to are the ones that say it sounds more like GBS. Non of them had ever heard of a person going from OK to completely paralyzed in  30 min. affecting breathing and internal organs as well as complete paralysis of the limbs.
