Two surgical treatments that may provide significant pain relief and other symptom relief, such as uterine bleeding, are endometrial ablation (excision/removal of the endometrial lining of the uterus) and hysterectomy (removal of the uterus). Hysterectomy, once the gold standard, is not more often recommended as a last resort.

However, similar and different side effects exist with each to varying degrees.
