Hello all,

How are you doing? emoticon cute

Type 2 diabetes, like most chronic conditions, can challenge aspects of life or make one feel frustrated. I thought today we could talk about those challenges.

What is the most difficult or frustrating aspect of living with type 2 diabetes? Is it related to your diabetes care and management, or is it related to something external? Is it the lack of support or understanding from others, the need to closely monitor blood sugar levels, the need to watch weight and diet? Feel free to share here!

@Courtney_J For me my problem with diabetes is mainly weight control, or I guess rather lack thereof. In the past few years I just haven't been able to keep my weight down, I guess maybe it's my age? I used to be in such a good place and was nearing remission, but I had a family tragedy and since then it's all gone downhill. I try to watch what and how much I eat and even track what I eat on an app and I was doing well keeping my blood sugar in a decent range. But I just can't lose the weight!

I've also started having tingling in my toes in recent years which I think is the beginnings of neuropathy. My doctor isn't too concerned but I am!

I also feel like non-diabetics just can'd comprehend diabetes they just have no idea how it affects us. How a small drink or how some foods can send us diving into hypo. I really wish there was more awareness out there I guess.

@jaks134 Hi, I feel your frustration. I'd also be concerned about the tingling. Have you considered going to see a diabetes specialist or a different doctor for a 2nd opinion? That might be helpful. Losing weight is hard, especially as we get older. I'm sure you know all the things that help with that, and I wish you positivity. Sincerely, Karen

The most frustrating to me is diet because I have to control my blood sugar levels.  I don't eat a lot of sweets but I have to check food labels when I shop.  I usually have this under control now.

I try as much as possible, to have a positive mind, to seek the positive part of my treatment and my dite to avoid frustrations.

But it's definitely the diet that frustrates me the most.

For me it’s not being able to eat certain food because of other medical problems I can only eat a few things. I’ve been a diabetic for about 10 years I’ve been keeping my sugars under 120 up until last year now they keep rising and I can’t figure out why I’m doing the same things I’ve been doing.

@Hudman653 I feel your frustration, sometimes I have the same problems. I have other conditions, and it's hard to figure out what I can eat and what I can't. I also think stress plays a part of numbers acting like a yoyo or a pendulum. I've also just been diagnosed with CKD Stage 3A, and I'm worried about that too - another thing to manage.

@KatieLong @Hudman653 Yes the diet is so frustrating. Not being able to indulge sometimes is so hard, especially around the holidays. I struggle keeping my numbers level too. I'm doing (or at least trying) to do everything right but not always seeing the results.

I am finding it difficult to control the cravings to snack at night. I have also just had the rest of my teeth removed so I am eating a soft diet and trying to make it diabetic friendly as possible but it gets frustrating because I can't eat alot of food because I have no teeth.

@Ribbeck Ah we can't see your comment!

Agree with you all on the diet part! I think for me also I wasn't aware of all the possible side effects of diabetes. I'd heard that you can have nerve damage sometimes in your feet, but I didn't know anything about the damage it could do to your kidneys, hence probably how I ended up with stage 3 kidney disease!

The hardest part for me is the constant suggestions from people who don’t have diabetes. My doctor suggested that I start a plant based lifestyle. He said that the one rule I need to follow is that if it grows out of the ground I can eat it. Of course I can’t drink soda or eat sweets, but I have those up a long time ago. If someone sees me eating potatoes I get a lecture about carbs. If someone sees me eating fruit I get a lecture about sugar. Also people tell me to try keto, weight watchers, fasting, etc  Everyone seems to think they know better than my doctor and don’t care when I tell them that I’m doing what my doctor suggested

it feels like no matter what I do people feel the need to tell me I’m doing it all wrong. Most days I can ignore it. But when I’m having a particularly difficult day it takes all of my energy to walk away.

@AZTiger98 If you are not diabetic do not give me advice. You do not understand what it is like. I have had 2 different doctors be nasty and tell me it is my fault I am over weight, and the other said you are not trying hard enough. Have you ever wondered why doctors do not have diabetes? After 10 years I am tired and depressed.

@KristinR --that comment from your doctor made me laugh sarcastically. Doctors are not dieticians and the 2 hour "education" they get in med school is a joke. I've been a vegetarian since I was 20 (I'm 58 now) and I was diagnosed at age 26. Plant-based diets don't guarantee anything. Be well!
