I am a newly diagnosed diet-controlled type 2 diabetic. It is my understanding that processed snacks are not good for me. Still, what is the healthiest common protein bar that one would likely find at places such as pharmacies and service stations - if I had to buy one?

@MattKramer Hi, I asked my doctor about this one time when I was first diagnosed, and if I remember correctly he said that granola bars and things like that aren't the best over all because they often have as much sugar as a candy bar, but that in a pinch, it's best to find ones that generally have less than 10 grams of sugar, at least 5 grams of protein, and less than 30 grams of carbs. He recommended KIND bars to me and that's usually what I go for because they're pretty natural and not as processed as some of the other ones out there. I usually just get the cranberry almond ones because that's what I see the most, but they have a billion flavors and you can find they pretty much everywhere now I think. I just make sure to check to back of the box and generally avoid the ones that are dipped in chocolate or yogurt. :)

@Courtney_J This isn't a protein bar, but my go-to snack are hard boiled eggs. I really like them because I can cook up a whole batch of them at the beginning of the week and take a few with me to work and they're also high in protein so it helps avoid hyperglycemia after eating.

Oh also in a pinch I like some of those 100 calorie pack snacks, but like was said earlier you gotta check the nutrition facts and obviously make sure it's not your primary source of food haha

I have a friend who is a nurse practitioner and she advised when looking for a snack don't just consider something with carbs. She suggested carbs + protein.  A lot of times I will eat 3 Hershey mini dark chocolates (15 carbs) and either an apple with peanut butter or a piece of cheese.  works pretty well for me!

Matthew my best find: Kodiak Cakes
I like the peanut butter flavor I did not like the maple flavor. The reason this is my best find is each package has two bars. The peanut butter flavor for both bars are 23 g of a carb, 11 g of sugar, 10 g of protein. There are two bars. So if you eat one bar you would have 11 1/2 carbs, 5 1/2 g of sugar, and 5 g of protein. This is hard like a granola bar but not too hard to chew. These two bars have the biggest servings for the amount of carbs and sugar the ones below listed have. The bars below are all small. These two bars are small but there are two of them. I like that I can eat one bar and have less carbs, and less sugar.

Kashi ripe strawberry bars 25 g of carbs 10 g of sugar to grams protein. This is soft and chewy. This is the sweetest of them all.

Bob’s Bar peanut butter banana and oats. This does not taste good. It is very hard to chew. It is nothing like a granola bar. 23 carbs, 9 g sugar, 6 g protein.

Kind bars Oats and honey with toasted coconut, 23 g carb, 6 g sugar, 3 G protein. This is soft and chewy.

You said your newly diagnosed. I recommend carrying the peanut butter granola bar with you at all times in case you don’t feel good. Put it in a baggie in case you only want to eat one bar.

@MattKramer I am also recently diagnosed with T2D. My go to protein bar is Pure Protein Bar from Costco. I'm not sure if it is sold in convenience stores/gas stations as I have kept my outings to a minimum since the pandemic. The box has 21 bars and 3 varieties: Chocolate Deluxe (17g carbs & 21g protein), Chocolate Peanut Butter (17g carbs & 20g protein), Chewy Chocolate Chip (18g carbs & 20g protein). They taste great and have had no adverse effects on my blood sugar levels. Hope this is helpful.

If you are type 2 Do NOT snack.  If it is a carb or protein snack it will raise glucose and insulin.  A fat only snack in a pinch if you must.  Fat will not raise glucose or insulin.

The correct dose of Insulin for type 2 is ZERO. Type 1 is a disease of no insulin production. Type 2 is a disease of Insulin resistance. You have too much insulin now, for god's sake don't inject more. High blood sugar is the symptom not the cause. The cause is insulin resistance. Your body's cells and especially your liver are FULL of sugar and don't want more. Too reverse insulin resistance eat 25 to 50 grams of carbs per day max, eat high fat medium protein. Eat healthy animals that are grass fed, whole dairy, all berries, nuts. green veggies and lots of avocados. Eat 2 to 3 meals a day, 2 is even 1 is better,  do NOT snack. Try to walk more, no heavy exercise. This works for everyone. Diabetes in not a progressive disease and is 100% curable by you!

Now, my endo claims sugar packs into fat, he recommends not eating meat, course I think he is a vegan. I dunno, I have read pretty much everything and tried all diets, The keto keeps me from having to take a lot of insulin and therefore not gaining. There was a time when I tried to eat normal and take insulin as I did I just kept gaining more weight and then had to keep taking more and more insulin. I have also tried Dr. Taylor low calorie diet, lost some weight, BS went down nicely, but it was just so difficult. Still at 121lbs. Frustrating, and difficult to accept.
