One of the main complaints of those diagnosed with Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is that the doctor spent little to no time explaining to them their condition, the prognosis, and the plan of care at the appointment where they received their diagnosis or where they were told the findings of the medical studies revealing nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

What has been your experience? Did you have a similar experience or did your doctor explain to you the condition? The plan of care?

I was diagnosed a few months ago with NA cirrhosis of the liver. Primary doctor knows nothing so sent to a specialist. Still know next to nothing except I need a transplant. I wish they would explain some of the things I could do to make the pain ease.

@Krsp1957 yes this disease is NOT related to alcohol at all, hence the non-alcoholic. Did your doctor tell you it has nothing related to alcohol at all? The name is so misleading and unfortunately general practitioners and many medical providers are not really knowledgeable of this condition and do little if anything of explaining to the patient what their diagnosis means and the prognosis.

Who told you that you need a transplant? It may be possible, but was the GP that told you? or the specialist? IS the specialist a specialist in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease?

No my doctor has repeatedly asked if I drink alcohol. Drives me crazy.

My gastroentrologist is the one who said I need the transplant. He monitors it and there hasn't been any change so hoping I have more time than original given .

@Docc63 yes I have experienced loss of balance and shaky hands that started to get worse a year ago. I went to neurologist who did several blood test,CT, MRI and lumbar puncture . What he explained to me is that I have high Homostestine which causes early onset of coronary artery disease which affected my liver and because the liver is not completely removing the toxins it has caused more vascular damages. He told me that this vascular causes damage all over including microvascular disease of the brain. The microvascular disease has caused me to have some balance issues, weakness and memory problems and shaky hands. The high Homostestine leads to higher risk of heart attack, stroke and Alzheimer's. He told me that I must avoid stress, watch the foods I eat ( avoid alot of carbs and red meat) I also take pyrodixine vitamin. I mentioned in other discussions that health issues can cause other health issues. So because I have the High Homostestine I have been diagnosed 1 years ago with 60% and 40% narrowing in two coronary artery.  I have carotid artery disease that was diagnosed two years ago . Its mild 40% and 20% .I have fatty liver, microvascular disease of the brain among other issues. Not saying this is what is going on with you. Hope you find some answers as not knowing is very worse.

About 8 or 9 years ago I was tired a lot and then my vision changed. I was nearsighted and then one day all of a sudden my vision changed to being farsighted. I couldn't see people up close very well but could see far away and that was the total opposite of my eye sight. I was feeling very poorly and had my doctor take me to urgent care. When I told her what was going on, she took blood tests and came back and told me that I have Diabetes. She said that my levels were so high that I had to of had it for quite some time now. It runs in the family but I was the healthy eater out of everyone. She also took xrays of my side because I was having really bad pains there too. They seen gall stones in my gall bladder so she wanted to admit me right away. I told her I had to go grocery shopping for my family and she ran after me and gave me this pill to take right away. It must have been a high dose of metformin. My daughter drove me to go grocery shopping for the family and I was feeling really bad still. I got all the shopping done, went home and put it all away and then told my daughter that I was really feeling bad so she took me back to the hospital. They were very happy that I came back. I was scheduled for surgery in the a.m. to get my gallbladder out. They were pumping me full of insulin so many times the whole 3 day stay there. When the surgeon took my gallbladder out he seen that I had a fatty liver and informed my doctor of it. On the 3rd day they were able to get my blood sugar down to 200 and I really wanted to go home. So they let me. I guess it was over 500 the whole time and it took a lot for them to get it down to 200. So when I went and seen my doctor he put me on a strict low carb diet and exercise program. I lost a lot of weight and got my A1C down from a 12 to a 5.3 in a month. That's how hard I worked at it. I asked him about my fatty liver and he didn't say anything about it. I googled it and it really didn't sound good... Still after all these years he has not said or done anything about it. I read that milk thistle helps with the liver so I have been taking milk thistle gel caps ever since then. I will be asking my doctor about it when I go and see him next month.

Wow. That is alot to have to go through. Do you know if your Doctor atleast checks your Liver Enzyme levels? Its a simple blood test that can be done. Its ALT (SGPT) and AST (SGOT) levels. You can ask for copies of your blood work, possibly review it online if you have medical access and if anything ask your doctor if ALT and AST is checked.

@Krsp1957 I don't understand how your medical doctor does not know that this is not related to alcohol.
