I had a high fever for days and ended up in the hospital, where an abdominal scan & bloodwork showed "fatty infiltration of the liver" with severe liver inflammation (ast and alt levels close to 700). I was also diagnosed with mono. Apparently mono can cause liver inflammation; the doctor said that it might stay inflamed for weeks or months (mine was inflamed for a year, and after that I still had mild inflammation). The fatty liver supposedly did not cause the inflammation, but I continued to have symptoms for 2 years until I lost most of the fat I'd gained before the fatty liver diagnosis (I had only gained 12 pounds, so I didn't have to lose much, but it took a lot of effort!!). After losing the weight, I started to feel better and the symptoms cleared.

Good morning! Yes my gastroenterologist never told me. I found out on my portal. As I questioned him, he was very vague. He said people don't even know they have it. He told me to lose weight and stay away from Alcohol. Left it there. I will say, he was more concerned with my Anemia.

Hello, my experience was only seeing the biopsy results. Until recently this subject was non existent except in medical websites. Because I had severe Hepatitis C and Cirrhosis and Diabetes I had 4 different doctors managing my care. I had Kaiser insurance through work and they were unable to offer me anything but Alpha Interferon for the hep c. I have spent 40 years researching and reading EVERYTHING About my intense liver diseases. I didn’t like my liver doctor-he was rude and condescending about my weight so I decided to stop getting care for my liver. After I was put on hospice in 2007 I had state insurance and I had the BEST pcp ever. I was with him until 2022 when he retired. I also had a new liver doctor who was rude and not very gentle and I didn’t go back to him until my gallbladder doctor said he was the BEST in the state. I returned to him and our relationship began in 2011. He has been a great teacher and we have awesome conversations about many topics. Because I ALWAYS had my 6 month ultrasounds done they found the cancer very early on so they burned it out and I was healed-No chemo No radiation. I had no family support during my ordeals because my parents were also in the late stages of their diseases and they passed away before I got cancer. I have been living by myself since my husband passed away from AIDS in 96 so I’ve never had to focus on anyone else but myself. I have become my own doctor because I’m so complicated and there isn’t anything I can be treated with to keep my liver from getting worse, So I started doing acupuncture at the college for my bad back and my liver. The only liver pain was when it was very swollen and was bruising my ribs. I was very blessed to meet the acupuncturist I have today. He has been teaching me how to change my life and how to reduce the swelling in my body. I’m now working on digestion as well because without a gallbladder and off my morphine I can’t eat much anymore and I have indigestion most of the time. I’m doing everything I can to reform my sugar and carb addiction created by decades of eating junk. The liver can be regenerated but only if it’s done early enough in the disease cycle. I started replacing one sugar item with a protein snack until I didn’t need a replacement. I started with donuts and Starbucks. I have dedicated my entire adult life trying to stay alive for real and Now I’m 5 years cancer free. I’m closing out this chapter and starting a new one- I have also had both knees fixed , infected with Covid 3 times but vaccinated 5x. I have a treatment plan to help my body do more healing over time.
Acupuncture Center of Portland-Christopher Bonnichsen is the only provider I let needle me. I still have 3 specialists who I now see yearly and a new PA. Lesson learned is to FIGHT for what I need by being educated about my diseases and I don’t give up on living. Now I have to teach the doctors how to treat me so they don’t kill me in their well doing.

One of the main complaints of those diagnosed with Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is that the doctor spent little to no time explaining to them their condition, the prognosis, and the plan of care at the appointment where they received their diagnosis or where they were told the findings of the medical studies revealing nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
What has been your experience? Did you have a similar experience or did your doctor explain to you the condition? The plan of care?
