Hello members,

With most chronic conditions, in addition to the physical component, there is also a mental component. Many people struggle with depression, anxiety, or become overly stressed. How and to what extent a condition affects someone mentally cna vary greatly from person to person... some symptoms or effects of a condition may cause some depression or anxiety, but to another it does not.

Do you struggle with depression, anxiety, or stress?
What are your coping strategies that you find most useful? Did you make any lifestyle changes?
Do you also take any medications to control the depression or anxiety?

Hello! Yes, the physical components are only one aspect of this condition. In addition to the pain and discomfort and bowle issues, I suffer from depression and anxiety because of this condition. I feel the anxiety comes from the bowel issues and the depression from the fact I have this condition and it controls to an extent my life.

To cope with depression and anxiety I take Lexapro. Does it help? I dont know... I hope it does.

Lifestyle changes? I try not to get stressed out like I used to over things that I cannot control.

@wlkfree‍ thank you for your openness. Why are you unsure if Lexapro helps?

I welcome you to also join the depression forum, if you find that would be beneficial.

I am unsure because I still get very down some days even though I am on the medication. There are days that you would not even be able to tell that I am on medication to help with my depression.

Hi @wlkfree‍ I too suffer from depression and I attribute it to this dang condition. It throws my life in a haywire and the symptoms further drive me in. I try to cope with it by controlling the flares, which I am making progress and hoping to one day have the disease completely under control. I Think when that happens that my depression and mental symptoms will subside some. I try to live stress free as much as possible

I have not tried any medications... I have heard pros and cons of it.

Hello. I don’t suffer from depression but I’m overwhelmed from time to time in researching and looking for resolve.... the mental state can be highly affected in searching for the What... When.. Why & How of the condition... I can see how it can lead anyone to fall into a poor mental state... I exercise regularly mentally... physically & emotionally... through cardio.. yoga & meditation...so I keep myself to stay as positive as I can with Chrons. I’m currently looking to heal with foods... herbs or spices since my diagnosis is moderate with no complications.

This condition is honestly horrid.. my depression started shortly after I was diagnosed, at 13 years old, the anxiety only got worse as well. I've been on too many medications the easiest way, that works for me, is honestly taking a nap or listening to music. Currently I'm not on any pysch meds...

I'm sorry all of you have this condition I hope you all get better both physically and psychologically.  Hopefully you get in remission.

Hi all, I too suffer from depression and anxiety. I take clonazepam for bed, and currently prozac for depression. I think the depression started after I was diagnosed in 2010. And also the social anxiety. I haven't always taken meds for depression though. It was only after some stressful situations in the past few years. (Divorce, losing home, and job due to the industry). And for a while I felt like I lived in the hospital. Then high dose prednisone gave me Cushing syndrome. It was one thing after another. To cope now I just try to get enough rest and sometimes just seclude myself from the world. Not having health insurance or an income prevents getting health care these days. I'm currently in a flare and I'm reminded just how much Crohn's affects the body. The bathroom, the body pain, fatigue, general ill feeling, etc..

Hope all are doing well!
