I just wanted to share my experience with xanax. It worked great in the beginning. But the problem with it is that the longer you take it the more tolerance you build up for it and in my experience had to keep taking more. I ended up on it at 4 mg daily for 12 years, then it began to nolonger work for more than an hour. Then ended up at the emergency room with severe withdrawal symptoms.. I had to go through withdrawal which was very bad. I finally made it through that and felt really great for a while. Then gradually felt worse again. It's been a rollercoaster since then. Right now, I am not sure where all my symptoms are coming from. My thoughts on Xanax are to use it only with extreme caution.
Take care,
I know how debilitating extreme anxiety can be, but be sure you don t get desperate enough to make it worse.

Not prescribed but my husband has been on it for over 20 years. Increasing doses until the current dose of 2 mg twice a day. Anyone think he is taking more? Yep! And I suffer. Hell of a Christmas with our daughter, son in law, and grandkids 7 and 8. And they drove from CA!

@NC_Sunshine It is my sincere hope you can get him off of it. They put me on Valium, which has a longer half-life and stays in your system longer, so you don't feel the need to keep taking more. I was able to taper off of that further. It was a very rough (not sure really how long-I had no sense of time at that point) but maybe a couple of months I came out of it. But I do think it did damage to my nervous system. Support is crucial. I never would have made it without my husband. They wanted to put me in the hospital to get off it, but they could not find a place for me to go. Sent me home from ER with my husband. I can only describe it as hell. But it can be done. Some people may not have as severe withdrawal as I did, it just depends on the person.
God Bless and Good Luck

Can't believe a doctor would let him stay on it that long. The effects of the drug ran out on me at 4 mg daily and doctor would not give me more. Ended up in ER where they would give me an injection and send me home. This would last about an hour and withdrawal would begin again.

@needhelp I've seen him have seizures in withdrawals when he runs out. Idk if he can get off it. His PCP told him that he can never get off it. I'm a registered nurse, I know better. But you have to be dedicated. He's the opposite unfortunately.
God bless you and congratulations to you for beating it.

@NC_SunshineI have not beat the benzos completely yet. They put me on valium to taper down Was doing well for a while then had a spinal tap. It turns out I had a lot of damage to my lower back. I had what was called a traumatic tap. Migraines and leg pain. For some reason I became much more reactive to everything and had to change to Ativan twice a day. Try to get by with once if I can. I even had to have it compounded because I reacted to a lot of things in it. Don't know if the long-term Xanax and withdrawal also had something to do with it or not. I really wish I knew. But the spinal tap seemed to put the final touch to it. I really hope your husband can get help.
