Hello,

This is my first time here.  I got bloodwork done last August, and my A1c was 6.5.  I just got bloodwork done Friday and my A1C was 6.7.  My doctor said I am in the early stages of diabetes.  Nobody in my family has diabetes.  I probably need to lose 80 pounds.  I have a permanent injury that makes exercise difficult.  I got these results on Saturday and have been very upset.  My cholesterol and potassium were slightly elevated as well, and the message from my doctor said his office would be calling to discuss.  My thyroid was high, he said that indicates my current dose of thyroid medicine is not sufficient.

I am so freaked out.  If I get serious about not eating carbs and sweets and lose weight, can diabetes be reversed?  I want to ask my doctor to not put me on any medication and give me a month to show him I can get my A1c down and lose weight.  Any thoughts or advice?  Thanks so much!

you need to start on metformin. It's cheap and may help your A1c from climbing, it's too high. You can always stop later. It will take too long to lose 80 pounds, you don't want your A1c going any higher.

But won't A1C go down within a month if you stop eating sugar?

I suppose if you could stick to a zero carbohydrate diet it would come down but I can't imagine following that kind of diet

I was newly diagnosed as well with 6.8 A1C.  My doctor put me on Metformin.  I have to modify my diet, but I am allowed up to 45 carbs per meal.  From everything I have read, diabetes can not be reversed.  It can go into remission and you live a healthy life though.

hi i am in a weird stage of diabetes where I'm not quite type one but not type two either. was hospitalized with an A1c of 13.5 in october.... by december i got it down to 7.5..... by February I'm down to 6.9.... i only take 500mg of metformin twice a day, and even then my doctor said if I'm still doing well by my next visit in march i will be off of it. i am managing my diabetes with only following a keto based diet, and even then some days i cheat. there are a lot of nutritionists who support diabetics following low carb diets and every year more data is coming out showing a proper low carb diet is reducing many patients need for insulin.

@Jeanette45 It also helps to make sure your emotions are controlled being that glucose levels can rise due to anger and it is normal to feel anxious its just a matter of time until you are able to adjust and live normally like before. Meat is a good thing to eat because it has no carbs which is mainly why our sugar goes up. A well balanced meal and you'll be fine but steer away from dairy and bread and potatoes and some fruits. Hope this helps! You got this🙂

@greatimadiabetic‍ Hi greatimadiabetic, thank you for your comment. That's great that you're doing better and making such great progress! Please keep us updated on how you're doing when you can.

Just a reminder to all that before making any changes to your diet or medical care, it's important to consult your primary care doctor or other healthcare professional to make sure it's a good fit for you. emoticon cute
