Hi @Sarahismymom, thank you for sharing with us. I'm sorry to hear that it your mom's condition declined so quickly. How are you and your mom doing?
Can anyone share some advice or support? What is it like to care for someone with lung cancer? Is there anything we can do to be there for them and support them through what they're going through? And what can we do to take care of ourselves as well?

God I don’t even know what forum I’m on. I just was scared and wanted to talk. This may be babble so please excuse me.
My mom is 75. She smoked from 1970 to 2020. No matter what I tried, I couldn’t get her to quit. She wasn’t a heavy smoker. Sometimes 1 a day. Finally, last year when COVID came along, she quit. Said she just didn’t want to smoke. Then she started to be tired all the time. I figured that was because she wasn’t smoking. Food tasted different. Her personal physician saw an elevated white blood count so mom was tested for leukemia . Weeks of tests ruled that out. The dr never looked at anything else. In the fall of 2020, mom began to lose weight. Her doctor sent her to a cancer hospital for a complete checkup. 2 masses were found in my mother’s lung around June 2021. Eventually the dr said a small area was cancer and the other was pneumonia. She’d been having trouble breathing & this made her hyperventilate. She’s always had panic attacks but that was never treated. I doubt she mentioned it to her doctor. She was admitted to a hospital Monday 8/30 because she was struggling to breath. She went to the ER and we figured oxygen and fluids would be what she needed. They gave her Xanax to relax her and she was completely out of it. She was still speaking though.
On Wednesday 9/1, her heart rate hit 160 - 170. She received medication to slow it down and was transferred to a floor for more serious patients. After that, she’s remained sluggish. Her signs seem ok although she’s been on a nose feeding tube. The dr started talking about making her comfortable and taking her elsewhere. It’s all gone so fast. On 9/7 she was put onto a bipap machine. That helped her tremendously but the dr explains her chest muscles are too weak to take deep breaths without the machine. He’s recommended Hospice care and needs my answer soon.
This is a nightmare. I can go to mom and ask her anything and she responds. She’s still thinking clearly. Now I’m supposed to give up on her? That her mind is seems sharp makes this so difficult. She was just working and dealing with clients 5 weeks ago!! Her body is failing her but her mind is alright. I just wondered if anyone had any thoughts. I have no idea what to do. She’s all I have. We don’t even know much about her cancer because a biopsy was scheduled for this week! I’m about to lose my mom and it’s all happened so fast.
