Hello,

I was warned that AS can affect the eyes. Does anyone have uveitis, or inflammation in the middle layer of the eye? Just curious how common it is and how you were diagnosed.

Thanks!

Do you have any eye problems? Have these problems been linked to your AS? What has your doctor prescribed to help? How do you do to cope?

Take care,

@LizziB I have had extreme changes in my eyes. I have gone to several eye doctors and they all say it is dry eyes. But I only have trouble at night. My eyes won't open because they stick together. I wash them out and it helps a little.Different eyedrops lasts about 5 minutes. Ididn't have this problem until my AS becomes more severe. It may have nothing to do with AS but I thought I would post this in case someone else had this problem.

Uveitis, which is inflammation of the middle layer of the eye (the uvea), is indeed a possible complication of ankylosing spondylitis (AS). While I don't have personal experiences or access to individual statistics, I can provide general information about uveitis and its association with AS. Uveitis can occur in various forms, including anterior uveitis, which is the most common type associated with AS. It typically presents as redness, eye pain, light sensitivity, and blurred vision. It's important to note that uveitis can also occur independently of AS.

@emyallium Thank you for your response. It sounds a lot like what I experience. I have been to a couple of eye Drs yet they don't seem to want to give me that diagnosis. But they haven't help me even after all these yrs either. I will look into treatments for Uveitis.

@emyallium Your feedback is much appreciated. It resembles my experience. None of my two eye doctors will diagnose me with it. Over the years, they've been useless to me. I will research uveitis treatments.

I started having Uveitis issues with my eyes when I was in my 50's. The itching and light sensitivity was very bad. I consulted an Ophthalmologist and was given a shot just beneath the eye. It felt better in about 1 day and I followed up with drops for weeks after. It usually came back every year for awhile and I was able to get it knocked down with drops. I took shots when it was really bad. Now if it happens on the weekend (great timing) I can call and get drops as long as I go into to see the Dr the next work day to confirm the problem. Seeking medical attention from a specialist should be done quickly.
