Hey, I've had MS for many years now (sometimes I almost lose count!) and I feel like I remember at the beginning the neurologist told me that I couldn't be vaccinated anymore. No flu shots, no shots for foreign travel, etc. Does anyone know anything about this? Has this changed in recent years? At a time where we may eventually have a vaccine for COVID-19, I've been wondering about it.

If I remember right I think the neurologist said that my immune system was attacking itself so it wouldn't be wise to introduce a virus to it, even if it's for inoculation purposes.

What do you all think? Thanks.

Hello everyone,

How have you been lately? emoticon cute

Now that the flu season is quickly approaching, I think this thread would be particularly relevant to us.

Do you normally get a flu shot or have you been advised not to? If so, do you count on getting vaccinated this year in light of the COVID-19 pandemic?

To learn a bit more about the 2020-2021 flu vaccine, you can read our new article on the subject here: Flu Season 2020-2021: What do you need to know before getting vaccinated?

Take care,
Courtney

@Courtney_J My neurologist said vaccines are OK as long as they are not live vaccines.  I had the synthetic shingles vaccine and will have a flu shot as soon as the pharmacies get more in.  Hoping the Covid vaccines will be synthetic.

When I was first diagnosed the physician told me I should not receive a flu vaccine. I started to do research with the MS Society and all the literature was suggesting that I do get the flu vaccine. Since then I  have received flu vaccine.  I’ve been diagnosed with MS for 21 years.  61 now.

@Rjackson Nice to meet you - I've been diagnosed since 1993 and am now 66 years old.  It's been quite the journey.

@padres44

Hi!  I get flu vaccine every year and my neurologist suggested I get the covid vaccine as I work in health care. (you can get vaccines as long as they are not "live virus" like the shingrix for shingles.) I received first dose with just arm soreness as the side effect.  My next is due 1/26/2021.

Hope this helps.
