Hi @FRANKE.SHIRLEY‍ - this discussion is concerning KETO dieting. If you do have concerns regarding diabetic insulin dependency or availability, I would encourage to create a new discussion in the Treatments for Diabetes forum... if you need any assistance in doing so, you can always reference The Quick Guide on How to Use Carenity or private message me.

I tried the keto diet for a week, and at first my numbers came way down, to normal actually. I was thrilled. I started feeling horrible, which I read is supposed to happen, and that it will go away. I could deal with that.

What I couldn’t deal with was when my sugar suddenly began spiking - started at 140, then 160, 180, 256, 300 - all while only consuming 20 carbs for the entire day(my nutritionist said for me to have 45 per meal and 15 per snack, so 20 is nothing)...and with being on 2 different pills, one twice a day.

So I tried an experiment. I ate carbs but stayed away from my usual sodas. The numbers started dropping. I found that I could portion control what I normally eat - cutting out soda completely - and my numbers were fine...back down to 180 gl, which is very good for me - but I can do better - and I’m not starving or forcing myself to eat things that I despise. I don’t need a diet craze, I just need to be more proactive in what goes into my body.

Now, for veggie lovers, I’m sure this diet would be great, since you would stay full, but it’s not for me - not to mention spiking my sugar for a mere 20 carbs...I’m gonna do more experiments and figure out what else I can eliminate naturally, and not have to adhere to a strict diet.

@OCwarrior I agree with you. I don't have the courage to try a diet as extreme as keto, 20 carbs seems so low to me! I prefer trying to make substitutions or eliminations like you did. Swapping out sugary sodas for unflavored seltzer, etc. I think the deprivation almost makes it harder for me so I prefer to go with a less restrictive diet.
