If you are experiencing side effects or you are not comfortable taking the medication, you should discuss the alternative options with your healthcare provider. For example, your healthcare provider may suggest alternative medications or lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise. Remember, it's always a good idea to talk to your healthcare provider if you're experiencing side effects or if you have any concerns about your medication. They are there to help you and will work with you to find the best treatment plan that works for you.

@uncleanatol Hello uncleanatol, thank you for starting this discussion. I'm sorry to hear you've had such severe side effects, but I'm glad you'll be seeing your doctor! Let me tag some members who can maybe share their experiences with metformin!

Hello everyone, how are you today? Have you also had bad side effects like nausea, dizziness, and vomiting while on metformin? Did they go away with time? What did you do to treat them? Feel free to share here!

Hello! I was diagnosed on May 30th of this year and so far have had no ill effects from the Metformin (my current dosage is 500 mg twice a day, taken with the first bite of a meal). Perhaps some of the heartburn I had for the first week was due to the Metformin but I can't be sure.
If you aren't already taking the Metformin with a meal, try doing that and hopefully it will help. Otherwise, I've heard from others that those side effects will often disappear over time. Hang in there!

@aafreimann Thanks for your reply, but I did take the metformin with food as instructed. It turns out, however, that I didn't need it in the first place which is why I had those side effects. Scroll up to see my comment.

In the beginning after I was diagnosed, I was on Metformin.  I was fine.  Twice I had problems.  On both occasions it tore up my stomach.  With this doctor I on Glipizide 10 MG and so far I am able to tolerate it.

When I was first diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 2009, I took metformin for a few months and had severe upset stomach problems. On my next visit to my primary care physician I requested a different medication, and my doctor obliged. Most of these medications that are used to treat diabetes will have some sided effects.

I take 2 grams of Metformin ER per day. I discovered that I had to take it with a full meal. I naively assumed a snack would do. I had chronic diahrrea. I don't have that anymore. I am aware that we all have different chemistry. My solution of only taking metformin with a full meal might night work for some. I cut my carb intake to less than 50 grams per day when first diagnosed. This was not good enough. I still had reading in excess of 110. I dropped down to less than 20 grams per day of carbohydrates and doing yoga and treadmill. That finally did it. I have been running on this method for 20 years now. I wanted to stop progression and I knew that excess insulin in my system would cause progression. So, this disease has not progressed in me and I don't have any complications. However, it took some amount of self-discipline on my part to get my A1C down to 5.0. I just need to work at it all the time.
