Since Ulcerative Colitis is a chronic, inflammatory bowel disease causing inflammation in the digestive tract, it is only natural that those diagnosed may need to use caution with their eating habits.

Despite there being no evidence that suggests that any particular food or diet causes, prevents, or cures inflammatory bowel conditions, such as ulcerative colitis, there are certain advertised diets and foods that are recommended in alleviating symptoms.

Needless to say, it is highly recommended with inflammatory bowel conditions to maintain a healthy and balanced diet and lifestyle.

What is your personal diet like?
+ Are there foods that you stay away from knowing it will irritate or trigger symptoms?
+ Are there foods that you prefer or that alleviate symptoms?

How often do you eat an in what quantities?

Has anyone been able to drink alcohol with their UC? I miss being able to drink a beer with the boys, especially with this summer weather...

@ulc1231 I can't, it really messes me up when I try.

I try to include some fermented foods in my diet for the gut bacteria. Kimchi  and miso are great ones from Asian cuisine and are really tasty. Who hasn't had miso soup at a Japanese restaurant? That stuff is good!

@shenghuo Huh, I hadn't thought of fermented food!

I can't handle anything that's really fatty or that has a lot of dairy in it. I also have a hard time digesting meat, so I stick mostly to fish and white meats. Raw vegetables are a no-go for me too. This is kind of funny too, but one time my doctor told me not to use a draw when I drink things because it can cause gas, so I don't use a straw in drinks! Now it's trendy to not use a straw for the environment so I was ahead of the curve!

Hello , My husband has stress induced UC . We have been recently married and I am looking for a diet that may help him since I am cooking all three meals everyday. Please share diet plans that you have found to be successful.

Thank You

Greetings @gedsnt‍ I have suffered with UC/Crohn’s since 1999 (high unnecessary stress have worsened symptoms) and have tried several diets.  First, get ready, this is not going to be a quick or easy fix.  Just because this month your body likes cheese, next month it does not.  Also, you may need to mix different diet plans to get the best results as well. Second, do a food diary of everything you eat and the reaction for at least 7 to 14 days.  From this list, you should know your food triggers or foods that your body likes and dislikes.  Then look for diet types that has a majority of foods your body likes.  For example, I cannot deal with highly seasoned or spicy foods, dairy, high sugar, or nut products.  So, I follow a Mediterranean/plant based and Paleo diet. I know that sounds funny but it works and eating with IBS is tricky and complicated. The key is to make sure you intake all of the nutrients your body needs with as little supplements as possible.  I would recommend working with a nutritionist who specializes in IBS.  A good start would be the Autoimmune Paleo diet and find your trigger foods that way.  Let me know if I can help further and best of luck!
