Having a positive outlook and attitude is very important for general health and well-being, and it can also help one better cope with a cancer diagnosis.

What or who helps you stay positive? Does staying positive come naturally to you or do you have to work at it?

We would love to hear your thoughts on this topic and any tips you have?

Thank you!

Thank God for the days you've already had, here on earth!  Know that EVERYONE DIES!!!  I accept that it's my turn to die now. I seek God's will and pray for a peaceful passing. I don't have pain right now, but know it's coming! I fill my days making special boxes with my possessions for my three daughters and my six grandchildren, and one for my husband, too! I don't have money to leave them, just my possessions. I write stuff in my journal for all of them. I can still drive, shop, run errands, cook, clean--not much has changed since diagnosed 8 months ago. I did 12 rounds of chemo but my tumors kept growing. Now, I'm on chemo again with different drugs to try to shrink and slow down the tumors in top of stomach, liver and bone (scapula). I've lost about 30 lbs since 12/5/17. I was 180 lbs and am 150 lbs now--have a lot of lbs I can still lose. I gave all my worries to Jesus! I'm not anxious or crying--I had a good life and made it to age 67--alot of people don't live that long! I'm not dying in a fire, car accident, or anything tragic--I have pain pills for when the time comes--I'll just stop eating and drinking, five days and then, slip away. I'll have my family with me, what more could I ask for?  I'll be starting a whole new life in heaven. I'll be an angel, and sing praises, and watch over people on earth.

I love the idea of making letters! You have such an amazing outlook @CAT+Truby‍. I wish we could all have that same or similar outlook and be thankful for the days we had and spent with the loved ones. You are still young and keep fighting! Keep it up!

For me, I try to spend as much time with my loved ones without showing them my suffering... just being with them.

@Lee__R Thanks for restarting this conversation, generally I think it's important for us to care for our mental health but especially when living with a diagnosis. Staying positive has always been a struggle for me. I've seen therapists throughout my life and a lot have given me great advice, one of which has truly stuck. Positivity is fleeting, just like every other feeling. Some that have helped are to stay present. Stay grateful. Go on walks. Feel what you're feeling then let it go. Also, it's okay to have a bad day and not beat yourself up for it. You can't always be "positive".

What really helps me stay on the bright side is spending time with my loved ones, especially my pets. I try to stay in the present so that really helps me. Somedays it just isn't possible though so for those days I just sleep it off. Ehh not the best way to deal but it's effective. Usually.

@Lee__R I guess I have always tried to find the good side of things. My husband calls it my "Pollyanna attitude." People as a whole don't work at happiness as much as hanging on to sadness, anger, or fear, etc. From our first breath we are on the way to dying. If you believe in a higher power and you trust in your spirituality, death should be on honor (Not to be rushed). I .recently went to CA  alone for a month to treat my IDBR & ILBRCA.  I missed my husband very much. What I realized was that we have had 35 years together very in love, and we have had our fights, but in all those great years we never had a argument that was worth it or changed anything except our happiness during that argument We wasted some moments we could have been making good memories. We need to choose to be happy and make our happiness.

I think, I have reached a time in my life that I am so in touch with my spirituality now. I believe we go into life at a set time and go out at a set time. I this is my time I will die and that's okay. I believe it will be an awesome adventure & if I not going to die, I'll get better and apply my lesson learned from having cancer by making the most of the time here.

I have always been the glass half full kind of girl.  I have never had time for negative thinking, it just weighs you down.

I stayed  positive all through my  diagnosis right through chemo.  I am going to kick cancers ass and I have.

For me positive thinking was the only way to go. I have 5 children and 1 grandson that helped me stay positive.  I wasn’t only fighting for me, I was fighting for them too.

Negative energy feeds the cancer, positive energy kills it.

It is a way of thinking and takes work. When that negative thinking enters into the mind, one must try and push it away. It is not simple, but each day consider it a step forward. Each negative thought you can kick out of your mind is good.

I try to consume myself with positivity- be it the radio, books, or surrounding myself with positive people. Get rid of anything or anyone that is a downer... you will be amazed how much it does help.
