We just published an article from Anna Renault, a cancer survivor, about her experience defeating cancer 8 times (now battling her 9th) and how she thrives with cancer. You can read the article here and feel free to comment on the article about your opinions or what you felt after reading it. It is a very inspirational article.

Ms. Renault states the most important thing to thriving with cancer is having "a purpose in life that keeps her alive and determined to fight." She recommends to anyone battling with cancer to "Find your calling. Stay committed. Lean on your support system. Find joy where you can."

She also states that surviving / thriving with cancer to her means waking up each day, being able to get out of bed, do her daily acitivties, and being able to eat and drink without vomiting.

Let's start a discussion where you can talk about how you thrive with cancer.

Please tell us:

1) What type of cancer you are going to defeat (cancer you are currently diagnosed with);

2) How many times you have already defeated cancer (if this is not your first);

3) How you thrive with cancer;

4) What does surviving / thriving with cancer mean to you.

I have always tried to continue to focus on the positive things in life... such as my family.

I also put posters around my house... encouraging posters of things I wanted to still accomplish in my life, like go back to school, beat cancer, take another family vacations, etc... Seeing these encouraging statements each day made me focus on not giving up.

Hello everyone,

How are you today? I thought I would revive this older, but helpful discussion! emoticon cute

Going through cancer treatment or caring for someone with cancer can be hard on the morale.

What do you do to stay positive on hard days? What helps motivate you to keep fighting? What helps you to "thrive"?

I don't know how I feel about this. I know it's obviously important to try to stay positive and not get bogged down, but sometimes I feel like there's almost this pressure on cancer patients to always be positive and strong and to be a "warrior" and set a good example almost. Does anyone else feel like that or is it just me?

Linda here.  I just joined and I am having trouble figuring out how to do things on this site, so I don't have a profile or a picture yet and no clear indication that this remark is going to be in the right place, but I would like to respond to suzzie that I also do not like the warrior/fighter images about cancer.  I always say I am in treatment for my metastatic breast cancer and that I am working hard to get the best care and treatments available to have mybest life while caring for my chronic condition.

I enjoy traveling in my 30' Class C RV.  Gets me out of the house and I get to change the scenery.  Can't go too far as I get chemo shots every Thursday, so I have to travel around that day.

I feel most times I am still living due to my daughter in my life. I also feel if it wasn't for that I wouldn't want to live. I am in constant anguish and very alone and my reason for looking for someone to talk to. Just to vent.

@Cooqie33 I feel the same way at times. I had a plan. I have 3 kids. I want to be positive, but I’m angry!

I used to be bitter and upset but believe it is molding towards hopeless. This is due to my case being the "rarest of the rare" cancer. My type is usually not malignant to begin with. Even so, usually it is an easy "fix" by removal. My personal circumstance has made any means of removal/cure ABSOLUTELY unavailable. I did receive the best results possible from proton therapy, being to pause growth TEMPORARILY. Which allows me to still feel the negative effects it's caused so far. Only to be suppressed by pills pills pills. Which most of them don't allow me to enjoy life much at all. So I chose to be on one pain med and a nausea med, as well as, Adderall for ADHD diagnosis gets and keeps me moving. Which is not the usual use of the ADHD med but it 100% helps me physically "get goin". I do have ADHD but I would recommend the use of ADHD stimulate medication to all cancer patients able to take them. Star athletes try/do use them for gains above their usual selves and others. So many has misused them to cheat etc and yet no one seems to use them to cheat the effects of dilapidating illnesses. I have seen the effects in other cancer patients, when they have tried Adderall or alike (Tramadol, Adderall etc) and it's universally thought of as a "miracle". Instead, the government should pay attention to what separate uses, cases separate from ADHD, with serious illness these stimulants can have. This of course considering I take them correctly (no snort etc) and many people worldwide do not. I have taken a lil bit over my dose maybe twice a year for the worst of days but majority of times it works well enough. What's best about it in the hands of the responsible is there's little kick back (half life vs withdrawal) for days that u decide there's no need to take it. I may be a slightly different case because those I know who are prescribed (with illness and without) it, aren't like me. Being how long one dose seems to last for me doesn't apply to them. I will feel effects from a.m dose till I decide to sleep that night. Even lasting next day (if taken on daily basis for me) but I seem to also receive heavier kick back. On next day, after one day of not taking it, I'm more sluggish and back to the normal hell of the cancer's effects Adderall combats. I don't mean to make this reply mostly about Adderall but feel I need to explain myself promoting such a drug. All I am saying is because of a bad uses, the "good" uses are narrowed down to specific diagnosis in order to lessen the abuse of it. I dunno. I am very sorry to hear you have 3 kids and dealing with what life has given you. I have 1 and some days it's way too much. I had custody of my daughter up to my diagnosis which staying with mom became better for her care. My cancer makes me very inconsistent in endless ways differing one day to another. I feel it has had my past suffer, my present hell most time and my future "f'd" from being any more than a patient. Wow 3 kids, I sure hope u have help.

The thought you have any kind of cancer is enough to make you cry then scream! But you have to do what Drs suggest or get other opinion. Do your research!
