Has anyone who has been on oxygen gotten permanently off of it with prednisone.? Before I was on oxygen, I had to take prednisone on occasion and I know the damage it does and my doctor doesn't like it for sure. But then I read where some people stay on it for 10 years to keep themselves off of oxygen......Don't know what to think.

I have taken a couple of short doses of Prednisone and I felt wonderful and I am hoping that in spite of the bad side effects the doctor will put me on a maintenance dose. I swear, I felt so good and could breathe so well that if I could have afforded it, I would have gone and bought the paint to paint the walls in this house! Now, to answer your question, my mom took Prednisone for years with no ill effects, except she might have been a little crankier than usual. Hard to tell, she was pretty feisty to start with. She did eventually end up on oxygen, but I think she avoided it for a good while. A friend of mine said her mother was also on it for years. Of course, my mom was monitored continuously as was my friend's mom for side effects and they both took calcium and had the injections. I guess it is a personal choice and it depends on how you feel. As it is for me, I have no quality of life, so I feel I have nothing to lose. Listen to your doctor, and a second opinion is not a bad idea.

Well, I have come to believe I will never be off oxygen. I was engaging in wishful thinking when I wanted to get off of it. I agree with all that has been said.
