Has anyone tried the mouth device for sleep apnea?  I plan to pick one up tomorrow from my health provider. I'm a bit skeptical about it because I've read it can change your bite. But I'm having no luck with the various masks I've tried. Any feedback would be appreciated.

I have been fitted for one and should pick it up in about 3 weeks. I’m praying it’s everything the doctor said it was if not I guess I have a $2,000 paperweight. I’ve been on the cpap for just under 4 years and before I got on it I had heard that some people had their lives changed miraculously overnight but unfortunately that’s not how it went for me. It did improve my health, bad headaches went away mostly and I feel better physically and mentally than before I started using it but still just don’t have the energy that I used to have. Also had trouble going to sleep so I take 2 Benedryl, I tried the other natural stuff, can’t think of the name right now but it didn’t work for me so I asked the dr to put me on a prescribed sleep aid and he doesn’t want to do it because then he’ll have to give something to get up so my overall sleep is still not where it needs to be. I’ve also felt for the last few months that my health was backsliding with the cpap so I searched out the Inspire system. The nurse in their office said I should check out the dental device first. Said that’s what he uses and recommends it over the Inspire. His office doesn’t even sell the dental device so I tend to believe him. My fingers are crossed. Any advice or comments are welcomed. Sorry for such a long post. Thanks.

I read that the mouth device can permanently shift your jaw forward over time and also make your jaw sore. That put me off using one, even though my medical plan allowed me to try one for a period of time before purchasing. I never did try it. Instead, I decided to go with the AirFit F 30i mask. I just got it and haven't yet tried it, but it looks more unobtrusive than the other masks I've tried.

Let us know how the mouth device works for you. Good  luck with it!

Has anyone tried an oral appliance? I'm waiting for a prescription from my doctor to try the SomnoDent "trial" appliance. If it's comfortable and reduces my apnea, I'll get the permanent appliance. I've tried all the masks with very little success. I've gone without any treatment for the past 3 months, but now it's time to try again, this time mask-free.

Hello @helsal‍, thank you for your comment. I've moved it to this pre-existing discussion about mouth devices for more visibility. emoticon cute

Have any of you tried an oral appliance for obstructive sleep apnea? If so, has it helped at all? Have you had any negative effects from it, such as jaw pain or bite changes?

@Chooper2 You'll need a referral from a doctor to be fitted for the appliance. My HMO covers 80% of the cost of the SomnoDent device. These oral appliances are expensive, but I hope worth the price.
