I was wondering if you can have Ankylosing Spondylitis and Spinal Stenosis together at the same time. I was reading about Spinal Stenosis and it sounds like my condition where the muscles around my spine begin to ache after about an hour of standing or leaning over a work surface. I went to a concert the other night and after about an hour of standing holding my phone above my head recording the show periodically, my mid and lower back started aching to the point where I had to sit down for a little while. But soon as I got up out of my seat within a few minutes it would throb until I couldn’t wait till the show ended so I could sit in my car and drive home. It awful because I want to do things but back pain slows me down . I really don’t want to take pain drugs just to get through the day.

I personally have not heard of it, but it would not surprise me. Our joints in the spine are already slowly being fused together from AS, from the inflammation, so any overgrowth would make the canal smaller and attribute to spinal stenosis.

Do you get numbness and tingling down the legs?

This may help. Have you addressed your concerns and new symptoms with your doctor?

I do not have a doctor for my AS , I was diagnosed 20 years ago by a chiropractor who was arrested and is out of business. I tell my primary care doctor and all’s he does is manipulate my back for two minutes and then he charges me $250 for a lame manipulation. No help . I’m planning on going to a proper doctor very soon . What kind of doctor do I go see ?

@DD41261 o my gosh! do not let a chiropractor tell you that you have AS... it is an autoinflammatory condition and a chiropractor cannot perform all the correct exams to make that diagnosis, like blood work. Even if they could in your state, I would not trust them to do so; would you rather see a rehumatologist who sees numerous AS patients a day or a chiro who sees only you a week?

Also, you should not be getting your spine thrusted when you have AS, especially not spinal stenosis -- your spinal cord is being pinched already, Small manipulations may be warranted, but that is only after your condition is certain.

Please be safe and see a rheumatologist to get the actual diagnosis... it may be likely that you do not have AS and have some sort of orthopedic condition, like stenosis - but even then get a diagnosis from an actual doctor first.
