Hi @Gordon,
Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us and starting such an important discussion. You’ve highlighted a problem that’s becoming increasingly common and relevant for so many people, especially those juggling with chronic illness, paperwork, and a fixed income. Billing errors, be they human or AI-generated, can slip through and have such big consequences, and it's so frustrating to have to act as your own watchdog when you're already dealing with so much fatigue, appointments, or hospital stays (which I'm also quite sorry to hear about you having to deal with over the past year).
💬 To all members reading this:
- Have you come across unexpected or incorrect charges in your medical bills?
- How do you stay on top of insurance paperwork or fight errors when they come up?
- Have you seen AI or automation make things better… or worse?

@Somya.P Medical -surprise billing- is a very large problem. Insurance companies I consider to be "legalized thievery" and no one seems to care or want to help. I hope someday for this to be resolved. The USA needs to be much smarter than what is being offered today!

It has become evident to me that the use of AI is becoming more and more evident in everything we deal with on a daily basis. My latest experience with AI has been in erroneous billings within the medical providers and insurance claims, particularly with the Intermountain Healthcare system and through Desert Radiology. I would urge anyone and everyone who receives bills from medical providers to check their coverage closely, review the actual Explanations of Benefits (EOB) that the insurance companies provide you with, no matter how small (or large) the invoice statement may be for.
I am in my 70's, retired and now have several chronic conditions to contend with. Over the last year I have been hospitalized over 10 times. Most times the durations was for about a week, some were only overnight, and I was able to get the necessary treatment for a few as an Out-Patient. My Insurance coverage states that when visiting the E.R. and admitted into the hospital within 48 hours of the visit, the co-pay is waived. If not admitted, the E.R. co-pay is $50.00. Recently, after an overnight, one day stay, after going through the E.R. I received a $50.00 statement from the Hospital. I forwarded it to my insurance through their patient portal to review as inaccurate. A week later I received the following message:
""Dear Gordon, Our records indicate you do have a $50 copay for emergency room visits. This is listed on your evidence of coverage and ID card. The copay does not get waived if admitted.
Your evidence of coverage states: Emergency care $50.00 copay for each Medicare-covered emergency room visit. If you are admitted to the hospital within 48 hours for the same condition, your emergency room copay is waived. If you get emergency care at an out-of-network hospital and need inpatient care after your emergency condition is stabilized, you must move to a network hospital for your care to continue to be covered. There is a $0.00 copay for worldwide emergency coverage. Includes worldwide coverage... ""
Notice how the first and second paragraphs are in conflict with each other.
Quite frequently I also have received bills for total Radiological services from Desert Radiology after a hospital stay. Each one of these bills do show up in my EOB as paid by insurance with zero co-pay outstanding. Usually in the amounts of $3,000-$5,000. My insurance usually clears these up quickly, without discussion.
As I mentioned above, I am in my 70's, on Medicare, living on Social Security and limited income so every dollar counts. My message to all of you is to watch all billings from anyone and everyone like a hawk. Some of this is common error, some is downright fraud, and now we also have malfunctioning AI Bots to deal with.
