The International Day of Friendship, July 30th, is a day proclaimed in 2011 by the United Nations based on the recognition of the relevance and importance of friendship as a noble and valuable sentiment in the lives of human beings around the world and with the idea that friendship between peoples, countries, cultures and individuals can inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities.

In spirit of this day, we thought it would be fun to create a discussion based on the recognition of the importance of friendship.

Please share and discuss with others the importance of friendship to you. How has a friend made an impact in your life? How have friends helped your or been there for you with your condition?

Dear Friends: Lupus, is a disease that keeps you home and sometimes bedbound. My friends have been very understanding and I got lucky!! I am 3,000 miles away and my friend is still hanging in with me and my moods. We have been friends since we were 17 and now we are in our 60s. GOD, blessed me with special people in my life. I have had friends from the nursing agency and they have a special heart!! Since my mother's passing many people came into life. The fact was losing my mother was the worse thing that happened in my life. I know from my experience, many people leave you as you get sick!! Some people are afraid and do not want to educate themselves about lupus!! I have had that experience!! Ignorance is not an excuse but people lean on that excuse-- they do not want to catch lupus!! This a no excuse and yet many people use lupus as a reason to get out of the relationship. I have had that experience because they are afraid!! Special people are friends and others are not!! As Doctor King said, "The truth shall set you free"!! The so-called friend does not show their colors. Friends are rare to find and if you have one, hold on to them!! Wishing all of you true friends and many blessings.

Always Mickey aka Michele
