Hi everyone, how are you feeling today?

Living with MS means that mobility can look different from one person to the next, and even from one day to the next. Some of us walk unaided, others use a cane, walker, or wheelchair, and some switch between tools depending on symptoms or fatigue.

But choosing to use a mobility aid isn’t always easy. Sometimes it’s a practical decision, and other times it comes with complicated emotions: fear, frustration, even grief or relief.

  • Do you use a mobility aid (cane, rollator, wheelchair, scooter, orthotic, etc.) in daily life?
  • Was there a moment that made you decide to start?
  • What has using one changed for you, physically, emotionally, or socially?

I was diagnosed with M.S. in 1985, which means that it has been over 40 years. I started using a cane not too long after the diagnosis really for vanity. By vanity I mean I was walking like a drunk person - although I NEVER drink, but I didn't want anyone to think I was drunk. Especially when they would see me exit the car I was driving and then walk like I was drunk. Bust most of the time I would carry it swinging from my arm. But there WERE times that I WOULD need it, because of fatigue.
