Hi @Kristina_M, I’m currently experiencing the same thing! I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis last week. I was experiencing severe symptoms in November and December. My hair is coming out in clumps! It’s been very alarming to me. I have fine curly hair that is naturally more dry in the winter but... it’s never been this bad
I’m going to try and hopefully get it to grow back through nutrition fingers crossed 🤞 In the meantime I’m looking into wigs 🤷♀️ They are pretty expensive and I honestly hate the idea that it wouldn’t be my hair. I feel a little ashamed. But if my hair continues to fall out at the rate it has been, I think it will be a good alternative.
Also! I watched a YouTube video of someone that had this hair and they used bumble and bumble hair powder. The reviews online are mixed so I’m unsure if I’m going to purchase myself. Basically it fills in the gaps between hairs.
hope this helps and let me know if you find anything that works for you ❤️

@Starfish Was you hair falling out from colitis or meds?
macymuffin
@ Are you off meds now? and was the hair loss from meds or uc?

@macymuffin I’m actually not sure 🤔 I was prescribed prednisone from my Primary doctor for one week in December. Then after my diagnosis last week, my specialist prescribed me prednisone for 4 weeks. I have been on it one week now. So it could be from the medicine from December.
But it Could also be from very poor nutrition/low cal diet. In November/ December I was throwing up and had persistent diarrhea / bleeding. UC was waking me up every hour over night, and the lack of sleep has caused me to lose my hair in the past... but not to this extent.
I’m hoping it’s not the medicine, because I’m supposed to be on it for 3 more weeks, and I really want my hair to start growing back.

My Dermatologist told me when I was in the hospital my hair went into a dormant state. A couple of moths later some thinned out. So not sure if its Balsalazide . When I was sick I had diarrhea a lot same as you. My blood came back good now. I am taking some vitamins. I am thinking it may be nutrition.

Has anyone experienced severe hair loss after their diagnosis? My hair is falling out in the shower and after I brush it, more than ever. It is becoming so thin and lifeless. It is very depressing for me as I am so young and my hair used to be a great feature of mine and made me confident. Not anymore. I feel like these diseases are just stripping me from everything that was once mine. I went to a dermatologist and they said it is basically from malnourishment and stress, so there’s really no treatment until I get my disease and stress under control. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions? @Lee__R can you help generate this discussion as it may apply to more than just people with digestive disorders (IBD, celiac, depression, stress, anxiety, major life event, etc.)
