Stroke recovery and care: Share your experience

Stiff left  leg. What to do 

My mom died of a cerebrovascular accident?  She was old but not too old 70 ish. She had been a widow since 1980 and so she did not have very many stressors. Me and my sisters left her at home in S Africa and we live in the US. We would be the only source of her stress.  She had retired and moved from the busy city to our farm house where she worked around the house and helped raise her grandchildren. When I last saw her she had lost weight as the elderly usually do. Otherwise her health was okay and she seemed happy. 

And then I got news that she had died due to CVA. How can that be? She was athletic when she was young. All of her 30s 40s 50s 60s she used public transportation to and from work. She also worked in the house cleaning and so forth. In her 70s she lived with her young grandchildren and my brother who was unemployed and is in his late 30s. She had a support system, from a nanny who occasionally took care of the grandchild. Local neighborhood kids used to help her with her supplies namely bread, eggs etc. She would give them treats for a run to the local store which was a nearby home. The farm is large and we had about three houses on the site.  We also have a large piece of land for gardening and planting of flowers. What I mean is that she did what she felt like doing which included gardening and a lot of moving around. The bathroom is outside located near a tank where she could get water and bathe etc. They rarely ran out of water because the house is equipped with two large tanks which gather rain from the rainy seasons. Generally it almost has never happened that the two tanks have been without  water. Which means that there was no need for the trip to the river which is half and hour away from the house. In the vicinity are other homes of other relatives. My uncle's home who has since died. My aunt's homes which she rents out to tenants and she occupies her main house. She too like my mom was a nurse at the same hospital where my mom worked. She too was on retirement and spent her days on the farm like my mom. My mom retired first. What I mean is that my mom was not alone or lonely. She could walk to my relatives at anytime if she needed to. Our neighbor is a family that we have known forever. The oldest son from that family built his house close to our home and he is a well known Principal of the local high school(like my father was when he died. He was a Principal of a high school in a different location though.) My mom thought of him as a son not a real son but a son all the same. 

Eventually after my last born son attended college, I was going to return home and take care of her.

What could have caused my mom's death? Am I insane to wonder about this?

Recovery time after a stroke is different for everyone - it can take weeks, months, or even years. Rehabilitation after a stroke can help to ease the transition from hospital to home and help prevent another stroke and may include speech therapy, physical therapy and occupational therapy.
