Unfortunately, those with psoriasis may receive rude remarks and/or stares because of the condition of the skin. And, sadly, a large percentage of the public is not aware of the condition and symptoms of psoriasis.

How do you handle these type of encounters or interactions?

Any tips?

I wish people would not stare. The most troubling is when it is an adult because a kid is understanding... they are curious and know no better... I remember me as a kid; however, adults that just stare makes me wonder what must be going through their mind about me that would make someone stare who obviously knows that it is not polite.

When I notice someone is seriously staring at me, I smile... I have even asked them if there is anything they are curious about that they would like to ask...

I have had the unfortunate stares from the skin lesions on my scalp, forearms/elbows... I have had the uneducated questions about whether it was contagious and have had the innocent questions about what it is. I have learned to deal with the stares and if a stare is noticeable, like I have looked away and looked back and the person continuously noticeable stares, I will give them a friendly wave and smile.

I would encourage others to be confident and prideful in yourself first and foremost.

I think I am lucky to have reached the time in my life where I don't worry about what psoriasis looks like. When I was younger, I had a real complex about it. I remember remember one time as a teen I got up off of a friends dark colored couch and left practically my whole arm print in white, greasy flakes on the arm! I was so embarrassed!

These days, if I see someone pretending not to stare at me, I usually turn to them and say, 'It's ok, it's just psoriasis, it's not contagious." Then they get embarrassed for starting. I guess this all comes with maturity. I would never have reacted like that when I was younger, I did everything I could to hide it.

@Starke I understand this and I agree that I think it may come with age. Definitely now I'm more of a "take me as I am or leave me" kind of person. And I've learned over the years that other people don't pay rent in my head, so I won't let them "live" there! If people want to stare or make comments, let them. It's my psoriasis and I'm dealing with it and that's all I can do.

I've DEFINITELY been through this, especially as a kid/teen growing up with it. I'm interested in fashion and I feel like the fashion industry and to some extent society is taking steps to become more accepting in general and then less "grossed out" by skin conditions specifically. Winnie Harlow has vitiligo, Kendall Jenner has acne, we're seeing more and more plus sized models, etc. Oh and of course Kim Kardashian has psoriasis and talks about it occasionally on her show or on social media. I feel like to some extent I'm more accepting of my psoriasis because I know that people in magazine and on TV have them too and I'm not just some freak. But maybe I'm being too naive?
