After nearly a year of being very withdrawn due to my depression. I have realized that I am losing friends and feel like I could also lose family if I don't explain how depressed and awful I have been feeling and how depression has been affecting me emotionally, socially, and mentally.

Does anyone have any helpful tips or advice on how to bring this topic up to my family? friends? How can I explain to them what I am going through? Will they understand? What can I ask them to do to help?

@jasmine1092 Do they have any idea of what you are going through? If they do, perhaps sitting them down and informing them how you need to come clean and how much it is truly affecting you.

If they do not know, same thing... sit them down and let them know that because you value their love and care that you need to let them know what yyou have been going through and that it is taking a lot to open up about everything, but you wish that they be understanding and supportive.

Perhaps if you seek out medical care or counseling even bringing them a long to possibly hear what you are going through or speak to the counselor/doctor about your condition so they can get a medical person's opinion... obviously you would limit their exposure to whatever you feel comfortable with.

@jasmine1092‍ I am sorry you are struggling and being open with your family and friends is not easy, but if you have supportive family and friends, coming open to them about your struggles may be very beneficial in the long run to dealing with your depression and how it affects you in your life: mentally, socially, etc. Those that you feel may not be supportive, perhaps you may consider or speak with those that are supportive about whether you should open up to them also...

Are your friends and family aware of the difficulties you are facing perhaps by observation? How do you think they will react: supportive?

@padres44 It was hard for me to open up to my family and my doctor about my depression but when I did it did seem to help a little. Everybody was always asking me why are you so down and I never had an answer at least now they know so it does take a little weight off of your shoulders at the end of the day I hope this helps.
