Hi everyone,

Talking about mental health at work can feel complicated. For some, it’s a relief to be open about what they’re dealing with; for others, it’s not so simple. There’s no universal “right” time or approach, it really depends on your situation, your condition, and your work environment.

Some people choose to disclose early on, especially if they need specific adjustments or support. Others prefer to wait until they feel safe and comfortable. And some decide not to share at all, which is also valid.

So today, we’d love to hear your experience:

Have you ever shared a mental health condition with an employer? How did you decide when and how to do it?

What made it feel helpful, or what made it feel risky?

And if you haven’t disclosed, what holds you back?

In my opinion, there are sometimes it can work for you and sometimes it is a huge problem. I work in high tech computer roles at companies. Most of us in our group are on the autism spectrum in some way or another, where the high functioning autism is actually a help in the job. So with most of us on the spectrum and we know it, we are part of a group where we understand our idiosyncrasies and shared anxiety about things. Almost a requirement to be part of the team. Thus, it works. On, the other hand having to deal with other mental health issues and having your coworkers know about it, Can be very limiting and embarrassing for the person as they want to maintain an image with their coworkers. I have other physical medical issues that can cause issues and at times make things embarrassing and very difficult. Such as my diabetes, neuropathy and i also suffer from incontinence, among other things.
