Hi everyone,

After your diagnosis what lifestyle changes did you make? Anything unique that you feel helped?

I, like many, changed my diet. I started with the DASH diet and implemented some from new things from the WHOLE 360 diet and now am consuming a blend, but still focus on limiting saturated fats and bad cholesterol.

I also slowly completely quit smoking, which was not easy but I never smoked a whole bunch, but still quitting was not easy. I still drink sparingly, but much less than before.

I also started engaging in physical activity. I am now up to an hour 4 times a week!

Also one unique thing I think helped and that I did was began to enjoy relaxing time with my family and not focus on work stress or taking work home.

Would love to hear form you!

@upanddown Hi, I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'm new to this whole thing. I'm taking care of my dad and he's recently been diagnosed with high BP, so I'm trying to learn as much as I can very quickly. What is the DASH diet?

I've been taking HCTZ for blood pressure. It seems to have help along with some diet changes.

@JudyMoody Hi Judy, sorry i didn't answer you sooner, I haven't been on here in a while! The DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) is the diet designed by the NIH to prevent and control high blood pressure. It focuses on lowering sodium and eating nutrient-rich foods that naturally help lower blood pressure. The Mayo Clinic has a pretty well outlined explanation of it: https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/in-depth/dash-diet/art-20048456

After being diagnosed with high blood pressure, I made several lifestyle changes. I reduced my salt intake, started walking daily, and focused on stress management through meditation. I also added strength training to my routine to support overall heart health. While I love hip thrusts for glute work, I also explored hip thrust alternatives like glute bridges, step-ups, and Romanian deadlifts. These give similar results and add variety to my workouts without putting strain on my lower back.
