What are probiotics?

Probiotics are living microorganisms that make up the intestinal, oral and vaginal flora. Their role is to prevent the proliferation of other harmful microorganisms responsible for the development of infectious diarrhea or vaginitis.

What are the effects of probiotics?

Probiotics are known to improve the immune system and intestinal tract, soothe irritable bowel syndrome, and reduce the frequency and duration of diarrhea. In particular, they prevent recurrence in the event of pouchitis for IBDs, such as Crohn's disease. They may even reduce the risk of developing colorectal cancer. In children, they may be able to prevent eczema.

Are there any side effects?

Some people may experience an increase in intestinal gas. However, side effects are limited and the European Food Safety Agency considers probiotics as food and not drugs.

In which foods would I find probiotics?

Kefir, yogurt, tempeh and sauerkraut contain probiotics in large numbers.

How should I take probiotics?

In addition to their presence in the foods mentioned above, probiotics are sometimes sold in capsules that contain between 2 and 6 billion bacteria. They can also be marketed as powders to be mixed in a liquid. Most often, these powders are composed of a mixture of 2 to 4 strains: Lactobacillus casei, lactobacillus acidophilus, lactobacillus bulgaricus, lactobacillus Rhamnosus, Streptococcus thermophilus, bifidobacterium lactis or bifidobacterium longum. Because of the acidity of the stomach, many bacteria are killed, so probiotics must be consumed daily and over a period of time to be effective. Consult a healthcare professional before use!

How have you used probiotics?

Feel free to ask questions, address concerns, talk about your experiences, etc. in regard to probiotics... this is dedicated to you. For example:

Have you ever been prescribed probiotics and if so, for which pathology? What did you think of them... benefits... negatives?

Are you convinced of their effectiveness, despite sometimes unclear research studies?

Do you have any questions regarding probiotics to ask the Carenity community?

I take probiotics... high dose in supplement form and also by my diet to combat my psoriasis and arthritis from psoriasis. I also take them for overall gut health and to help protect me against other autoimmune diseases.

I am interested in knowing what probiotic brands others take here and to what success? What does?

I take Renew Life Adult Probiotic with 30 billion CFU.

I've never used probiotics unless I was taking an antibiotic because I have multiple autoimmune diseases. My doctors seem to want to weaken my immune system so to see something that helps develop a healthy immune system usually makes me think they don't want me to take that. I have never asked so I guess I should look into it. Maybe it could help.

I used probiotics for a long time through my primary care doctor but never saw any improvement to a “healthy gut”. My GI actually told me to stop for many autoimmune reasons but also because I have extreme food allergies and most probiotics contain milk and are not labeled gluten free.
