A new study suggests that butter may increase the risk of early death, while plant-based oils could offer health benefits. Researchers tracked over 221,000 people for more than 30 years and found:

  • People who ate the most butter had a 15% higher risk of death than those who ate the least.
  • Those who consumed the most plant-based oils had a 16% lower risk of death.
  • Replacing butter with plant-based oils was linked to a 17% lower risk of death.

I gave up butter long ago. Too much saturated fat.

The best processed oils to use if you must are the natural olive and avocado oils. Vegetable seed oils are terrible for you. More current research is showing that butter, tallow and lard are even better for your body. Most of the negative hype was made up by the companies that process and sell you the corn, vegetable and other seed oils.

Just like the hype about margarine a few decades ago, that is garbage that does not digest in the human body. Current research says that margarine Is high in trans fatty acids. Contributes to heart attacks. Increases cholesterol. Lowers quality of breast milk. Decreases immune response. Decreases insulin response.

Again, it is best to use olive or avocado oils if you are not wanting to use animal products like butter, lard or tallow. But follow the money when researching these options. Saturated fat, including the type found in butter, has been a subject of debate in nutrition science for years. While some saturated fat in your diet is not inherently harmful, excessive consumption can pose potential risks: Heart Health: Diets high in saturated fat can raise levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, often referred to as "bad cholesterol." Elevated LDL cholesterol levels are linked to an increased risk of heart disease. Caloric Density: Butter is calorie-dense and high in fat, so over consumption may contribute to weight gain, which can indirectly affect heart health and other conditions. Nutrient Balance: High intake of saturated fats can crowd out healthier fats, like monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats found in foods like olive oil, nuts, and fish, which are beneficial for heart and brain health. That said, moderation is key. Recent research suggests that moderate amounts of saturated fat, especially from natural sources like butter, might not be as harmful as once thought, particularly when part of a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats.
