Hi everyone! 😊

How are you all doing today?

Let's talk about a topic that’s close to all of us: how to season our food in a healthier way without relying on salt. 🧂

Salt is a key part of our diet, but too much of it can be harmful. The American Heart Association recommends no more than about 1 teaspoon of salt per day (that’s around 2,300 milligrams), and ideally, less than about 2/3 teaspoon (1,500 milligrams) for most adults. Unfortunately, many of us exceed this amount regularly, which can increase the risk of high blood pressure and heart disease.

So, let’s share some ideas on how we can cut down on salt by using other spices and herbs that can boost both our health and the flavor of our meals. Here are a few suggestions:

🌿 Herbs: Fresh or dried herbs like basil, oregano, thyme, and rosemary can add rich flavor to your dishes without the need for salt.

🌶️ Spices: Spices like turmeric, cumin, paprika, and cayenne pepper can bring warmth and complexity to your meals.

🍋 Citrus: The juice and zest of lemons and limes provide fresh, vibrant flavors that pair especially well with fish and chicken.

🍷 Vinegar: Different types of vinegar—such as balsamic, apple cider, and red wine vinegar—can add a tangy twist to salads, soups, and sauces.

🧄 Garlic and onions: These veggies make a great base for many recipes and can enhance the taste without needing extra salt.

What salt-free seasoning alternatives do you use in your cooking? Do you have any specific recipes or dishes that you prepare entirely without salt? And how do you manage when you're eating out?

Let's share our tips and experiences! 🌱

Thank you for posting a current and very worthy topic for discussion Somya,

Having several chronic conditions and as many doctors to deal with them, they all talk about reducing or eliminating salt in my diet. The diuretics that I take have a negative impact on my kidneys but also do little to reduce the edema in my legs. This along with lymphedema and neuropathy, the many drugs I must take for this and the other conditions apparently do little to relieve them. I try to use herbs and other spices to help eliminate salt in the diet, but most processed and otherwise prepared foods contain loads of added salt. Even the "low salt" foods advertised contain excessive amounts of salt. Watching the television chefs on the TV demanding loads of salt when cooking meat just slay me. It is almost like a conspiracy to kill us all with excessive salt everywhere we turn. My morning breakfast always has two eggs with either 2 sausage links or 2 slices of bacon and 2 slices of toast or English Muffin. Never add salt to the eggs, only pepper. When cooking any other meal, its only herbs and spices with little or no salt.

Thank you again for the opportunity to voice my 2 cents worth.

G
