Hello everyone

Many of you have may be familiar with the Washington v Glucksberg case where the Supreme Court left the matter of constitutionality of a right to physician-assisted suicide to the states. This case and others have made advancements in the legal rights of patients, or guardians, to practice voluntary passive euthanasia.

By the end of September 2019, physician-assisted suicide will be legal in the District of Columbia and nine US states: Hawaii, Maine, New Jersey, Oregon, Vermont, Washington, Montana and California.

While each state varies to some degree in the laws governing physician-assisted suicide, in general, a patient must have a terminal illness with a prognosis of 6 months or less to live, and the method used involves a prescription from a licensed physician approved by the state in which the patient is a resident.

The topic of euthanasia raises ethical questions and brings about concerns regarding the right of patients to decide when and how to end their life. We will soon launch a survey on this subject, in order to gather your opinions on this subject. The results will be shared in an article published in the Health Magazine.

In the meantime, we are creating a discussion on this topic to give you the opportunity to give your opinion and discuss with other patients. Join this discussion and discuss it together!

Do you agree that physician-assisted suicide should be left up to the states? Do you think more states should legalize physician-assisted suicide?

Do you believe that physicians should not face criminal charges for facilitating patients’ wishes to end their life?

Have you ever thought about this for yourself or someone close to you?

Although this way to die, suicide, can be viewed as immoral especially from a religious viewpoint and for family members who may not have been informed by their loved one that this is the route they want to take. Family members sometimes want the person with the illness to try more and more procedures or try a new treatment not ready to give up and/or accept the diagnosis. This becomes a sort of torture for the patient. My grandfather who suffered from Emphysema for years and in the last 3 years of his life he had to have the oxygen tank at all times. My uncle, aunt, and mother had him travelling to and from Wisconsin to Minnesota to the Mayo Clinic for a good year and a half for alll types of treatments that neither benefitted him in the least!! One day while we were visiting my granddad he pulled me to the side while they all were out talking to the doctor, he asked me if I would tell them that he did NOT want to do anymore of any of the testing. He said that he was tired very tired of all the prodding and poking and just wanted to rest. What really tore at all of our heartstrings was when granddad really was hesitant to tell them before to stop was that he didn't want them to be upset with him for not wanting to try more treatments and thought they'd think that he was a quitter!!! So see, people need to understand that all of those treatments and tests really does take a tremendous toll on a patient's already fragile body and they may have come to terms with their condition and the outcome and it is the family members who need to just take in to consideration everything the patient has to endure and IF it is really worth the trouble.

I believe people who have less than 6 months due to a terminal illness absolutely have the right to decide how they want to proceed and the options that are available to them. If it is against the family's religion then a pastor or priest should be brought in immediately and they go from there.

I am if the opinion that our higher power decided when we should be born. Therefore, no matter the amount of pain I am suffering, please let my God take me to my next journey!  The doctor(s) can make me comfortable as possible. However, please allow my Lord and Savior to take me in my Lord’s “Great Time”!  I love the Lord and I know the Lord loves me! I trust in that wisdom for me to move to my next station!

My body, my choice. I have Advance Directives outlining my desires regarding euthanasia/assisted suicide, including signed and notarized statements by the family members who will be in charge of carrying out my desires attesting to the fact that they will do so. Those directives include the statement that if I am in a medical facility and/or being treated by medical personnel who, for religious or any other reasons, will not carry out my orders then I am to be transferred to a facility with personnel who will will abide by my wishes.
